QUICK TIP: Do It Wrong & You’ll Lose Subscribers
One of the fastest ways to increase the size of your mailing list is to get your existing subscribers to tell their friends about it. Word of mouth marketing is an excellent strategy – It works offline and online.
Many eZine publishers put a PS at the end of their email telling their subscribers to ask that they forward the newsletter on to their friends. The publisher writes something similar to this:
P.S: Do you know any of your friends that will benefit from this content that you’re reading now? If so, forward it to your friends!
Does this work? …
Yes. But it’s a two-headed sword. In fact, if you do it wrong, it can decrease your subscription rates!
HOW? Let’s say you’re on my mailing list (if you’re not and you’d like to be – please visit my website at http://www.myvirtualpartner.com to subscribe). You receive an issue where I talk about increasing website traffic. It’s something you know your friend Susan has been asking about so you happily forward my newsletter to her.
Guess what might happen when your friend Susan sees the forwarded email? She may not notice that it came from you rather than directly from me so she clicks on the unsubscribe link thinking that she’s being spammed… AND YOU’RE REMOVED FROM MY MAILING LIST. Susan never subscribes and I’ve lost a loyal subscriber.
A better strategy would be to create a tell-a-friend page or format your P.S. to read:
