3 Tips To Make Your Site Mobile Friendly

Everywhere you look you see people using Smart Phones, iPhones and a variety of handheld devices to surf the web.  I’m sure there’s some fancy statistic I could look up that will tell me the percentage of browsing done by mobile device… and I’m sure as soon as I type it here, it will be outdated.  Suffice it to say, there’s a lot of mobile browsing going on.

Of course, devices like the iPhone and iPad and the Samsung Galaxy S3 make it easy to browse the web, no matter where you happen to be.  So chances are that your site has been visited recently by someone using a mobile device.  If you do any kind of e-mail marketing (publish a newsletter or send regular broadcasts to your followers) or even if you post links to your content on Twitter or Facebook, people will find your site on their phones.  I don’t know about you, but I have email delivered to my Blackberry and often click on the links in the emails to find out more information or view a special offer.  Chances are pretty good that mobile browsers have come knocking on your virtual door.

That’s why I want to cover a few simple ways to make your site mobile friendly.  I said simple — I’m not going to get too techie.  If you need help with any of these steps, just drop me a line in the comments or on Twitter.
Testing Your Site
First thing’s first: you need to check if your site is mobile friendly.  There’s an online validator that can test your site but I promised to keep these steps [...]

Quick Tip: Find The Right Video Camera For You

I have been doing a fair bit of video editing for clients lately.  Seems more and more of them are starting to understand the power of online video and I’m super excited to help them polish up their message so that it can get out to their audience and really showcase their expertise.  If you’re considering online video, one of the first things you’ll need to do is invest in a video camera which means you’ll need to determine what kind of video camera you need.  Note: I said what kind of camera you need, not the camera you want.

I recently moved and one of the things that I lost in the transition (meaning I didn’t pack it and haven’t yet picked it up from my old office space) is my Flip Camera.  I loved my little flip as it made doing video really easy and I’m a little sad that now that I have a new office space that lends itself to better video, I don’t have my camera.  So I’ve been thinking about investing in a new camera.  Here are the factors I will consider when making my decision:
Budget
Budget is often at the top of my list when making a decision for my business.  How much is it going to cost?  What will it enable me to do?  How much will my revenue stream increase as a result?  These are typically the questions I ask myself when evaluating different solutions and more often than not, I don’t pick the lowest price offering but the offering that has the greatest impact on my revenue stream.
How Will The Video Camera [...]

OptimizePress: An Easy Tool For Designing Attractive Salespages & Landing Pages

OptimizePress: An Easy Tool For Designing Attractive Salespages & Landing Pages

Designing an effective and attractive salespage or landing page got a whole lot easier with the introduction of OptimizePress.  If you haven’t heard the buzz, OptimizePress is a WordPress theme that gives online business owners with limited HTML coding and design skills the ability to create optimized squeeze pages, attractive salespages, launch campaigns, and member centers.

As an online business owner, or really anyone who has been online for any length of time, I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of long form salesletters touting the benefits of the latest product or service.  You’ve definitely seen them, probably even read some of them, studied a handful to model your own salespages on, and maybe even bought from them.  The truly adventurous have probably even taken a stab at designing one of their own – with varying degrees of success and frustration!

It comes as no surprise that the long form salesletter is evolving.  Many marketers are beginning to use shorter pages or creating a video salesletter: a 20 or 30 minute autoplay video on a blank white page with a delayed buy button.  These pages are becoming increasingly common.  In part because of the effectiveness of video and audio.  In part because of the growing popularity of OptimizePress.
Why Do You Need Squeeze Pages and Salespages?
Anyone doing business online needs their website visitors to take a specific action when they land upon one’s website: in most cases, submit and email address or purchase a product.

Salespages and squeeze pages are designed to give your website visitors direction instruction as to what you are trying to get them to do. They’re set up to give your [...]

Seriously… You’re Not Supposed To Do It All! A Case For Outsourcing

Seriously… You’re Not Supposed To Do It All! A Case For Outsourcing

Let me throw some #TRUTH your way: you cannot possibly do everything you need to do in your business by yourself.

Did you hear me?  Let me say it again: you cannot possibly do everything you need to do in your business by yourself!

Did you catch it that time?  I hope so!

Sorry, I know I’m on the verge of a rant here but these past few weeks, I’ve been speaking with a few online business owners who are frustrated because they can’t do it all.  The sheer amount of tasks that you have to stay on top of as an online business owner, and frankly even an offline business owner, is staggering.  Everything from web design and programming to list building and viral marketing to billing and bookkeeping to connecting via social media and… well the list goes on and on.  Add to that the thing that you actually offer as a product or service in your business and you’ll quickly realize that you can’t possible do everything that needs to be done to effectively run your business and still keep your sanity.

But online business owner after online business owner thinks they should.  And they try to… and things fall through the cracks.
A Proven Success Strategy
Let me let you in on a little secret: focus on your strongest skills and talents and outsource the rest to those whose skills and abilities are strongest in those areas.

For example, I am not a big fan of bookkeeping.  Don’t get me wrong, I really like math and I really like having an accurate view of my income and expenses but I just never seem to [...]

Social Bookmarking Increases Organic SEO

Social bookmarking is a popular field of social networking. And it’s easy to understand why. When done correctly, it’s a great way to increase visibility, create connections and drive traffic to your website or blog.
What is Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking is similar in concept to your browser’s bookmarks or favorites menu in that it’s a way to store, organize and manage links to web content. The difference between your own personal bookmarks and social bookmarks is where they’re stored. Personal bookmarks  are stored on your own Computer would and accessed only by you. Social bookmarks are stored on a social bookmarking website and visible by anyone who visits that site.
How does Social Bookmarking work?
Nothing too complicated here: if there’s a link you want to remember, you can add it to a social bookmarking site. Remember: it’s just like the bookmarks in your favorite browser. You want to save a link, you bookmark it. The bookmark can usually be set as public (visible by anyone) or private (visible only to you).

From an aggregate perspective, bookmarks shared on a social bookmark site can usually be viewed by visitors to the site chronologically or by category or by popularity. Some of the bookmarking sites allow users to leave comments on bookmarks, share bookmarks with other social networks or rate the bookmarks. Rating popularity or sharing them makes them more visible and increases their popularity. Since bookmarks can be sorted by the viewer by popularity, if your bookmark makes it to the front page of a social bookmarking site, you can capture a sizable amount of traffic.

That’s why you see social sharing icons on [...]

Getting Things Done: A Checklist To Help Create Error Free Broadcasts

Getting Things Done: A Checklist To Help Create Error Free Broadcasts

I have been helping clients send out a lot of broadcasts lately.  So I thought I would share my broadcast checklist.  I will admit, I sometimes skip the checklist when I’m in a hurry but there are certain items I never skip (like the test broadcast).  Feel free to share any tips or “checks” to enhance the checklist.
Email Marketing & Broadcast Checklist

Spelling & Grammar Check: Sounds like a no-brainer, right?  After all, most word processing programs have spell check functionality built in.  Believe it or not, the spell check isn’t infallible.  It does get things wrong on occasion.  Read your broadcast before hitting send.  Simple.  If reading s-l-o-w-l-y isn’t your strong suit (I tend to glance at things quickly and read what I think should be there rather than what is there, especially when I get busy) have a second (or third) set of eyes on the broadcast before hitting send.  If spelling and grammar mistakes don’t bother you (and there are many well-known business coaches for whom this is the case) then skip this step.  For the rest of us, a good spell and grammar check is advisable… especially if you tend to write your broadcasts directly into the broadcast window.
Formatting Check: Is your spacing consistent? Are your fonts the right size and the same font-family? Are your images aligned correctly and displaying properly?  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received a broadcast where the spacing has been wonky or there have been issues with mismatched fonts. A well designed template can help you avoid formatting errors.
Content Check: I know you might think this is a repeat [...]

The Circle of Champions

I’m sure that over the past year or so, you’ve likely received several emails from one Internet Guru or another telling you that the quickest way to find success online is with niche marketing. So what exactly is nice marketing?
What Is Niche Marketing
Niche Marketing refers to finding a segment of the overall market for a service or product. It’s essentially a spot you carve out for yourself in the Interwebs and establish yourself as an authority or expert. Some niches are very broad. But the best niches are laser-focused.

For example, a broad niche might be “weight loss.”  A laser-focused niched might be “weight loss with the raw vegan diet” and an even narrower niche topic could be “weight loss using green smoothies.” See how it works?

You then develop a solution to meet the needs of that segment and solve a problem or issue that faces them.

Happy Client: Multiple Streams Theme Customization

A few weeks ago I received a call from David Dutton.  He was looking for someone who could customize a Multiple Streams Theme WordPress blog theme and wondered if I was up to the task.

Turns out he had already contracted someone for the project and they had delayed on getting started.  Not only that but once they did get started, they realized that the project was beyond their skill set.  So asking if I was capable of customizing the theme was a valid question.

I use the Multiple Streams Theme on my own blog and knew I could manage the task.
Multiple Streams Theme Customizations
The Multiple Streams Theme is a very well built WordPress theme.  But unlike some other premium themes, most of the customizations need to be done in the code directly rather than through the theme editor that some premium themes have.  With the Multiple Streams Theme, you need to modify the php and css files directly in order to make changes.  It’s a very well designed theme and once you know where changes need to be made, it’s easy to understand how to customize the theme.

I worked with David to create a custom header for the site as well as tweak the layout and look and feel of the theme.  We also worked together to design a few graphics to be used in the sidebar and to highlight some important site features.  The project was completed on a tight time line – the majority of the site was ready within 24 hours and launched on his own server within a week.

You can see the results of the customizations below or [...]
