The Real Story of the Pink Ribbon

I know you’ve seen them on lipstick and cameras and cakes and soda pop bottles skis and snow jackets and popsicle sticks.  If you follow football (raise your hand if you do… what it’s just me??) you’ve seen them on helmets and jerseys.  They’ve even been on buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken!!!

Those little pink ribbons raising “awareness” for breast cancers have been just about EVERYWHERE!

And you know what, they weren’t even pink in the beginning!

They were peach-colored.

And they were hand made in the basement of Charlotte Haley.  A 68-year old grandmother and daughter and sister who would make these little ribbons by hand and sold them with the following note attached:

“The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention.  Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.”

Originally, it was peach and it’s purpose was entirely different than it is today. It’s purpose was… PREVENTION!

Self Magazine and Estée Lauder caught wind of her campaign they tried to adopt it and “work with her.”  She refused saying they were too commercial.

After Self Magazine and Estée Lauder met with their lawyers, the decision was made to turn the ribbon pink and run on their own.

And now here we are today.

With a big pink STINK on our hands and a whole lot of cancer awareness, but almost NO prevention.

A dear client and friend of mine is committed to raising a stink about pink.  She says:

Ms. Haley, wherever you are, we’ve got your back!

In honor of the peach ribbons cut in a basement with care…
And because we believe in self-care, not cancer…
Because we [...]

The 5 Biggest Myths of Online Video

Lou Bortone is my Go-To Guy when I want to learn anything related to online video.  He’s worked with a few of my clients to help them craft some fantastic online videos.  I’m sharing a recent article he wrote debunking the myths of online video.  Enjoy!
The 5 Biggest Myths of Online Video
Despite the explosion of video marketing, there are plenty of lame excuses why some entrepreneurs still aren’t embracing video as a promotional resource. Let’s debunk the five biggest video myths right now.
Myth #1: Video is too damn technical.
The Real Deal: Video has never been easier, and it’s surprisingly low-tech. Unlike “back in the day” when I worked at E! Entertainment Television, you do not need an editing suite full of fancy equipment. A $40 webcam or a $100 pocket video camera is more than enough to get started. Need editing software? Forget it!  Just log on to YouTube and use their editing tools for free. It’s not too techie anymore. If you can do PowerPoint, you can do video.
Myth #2: Video is too expensive/I need to buy equipment.
The Real Deal: Continuing on our earlier theme, you don’t have to invest anything to get started with video. If you have a webcam, great. If not, you don’t even need a camera to create video!  Check out the free websites like or to create easy videos on the fly with just photos and some music.   And remember, video hosting sites like YouTube are completely free and easy to use. Online Video has truly become “low-hanging fruit” for marketers.
Myth #3: I need to look like Brad [...]

OptimizePress: An Easy Tool For Designing Attractive Salespages & Landing Pages

OptimizePress: An Easy Tool For Designing Attractive Salespages & Landing Pages

Designing an effective and attractive salespage or landing page got a whole lot easier with the introduction of OptimizePress.  If you haven’t heard the buzz, OptimizePress is a WordPress theme that gives online business owners with limited HTML coding and design skills the ability to create optimized squeeze pages, attractive salespages, launch campaigns, and member centers.

As an online business owner, or really anyone who has been online for any length of time, I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of long form salesletters touting the benefits of the latest product or service.  You’ve definitely seen them, probably even read some of them, studied a handful to model your own salespages on, and maybe even bought from them.  The truly adventurous have probably even taken a stab at designing one of their own – with varying degrees of success and frustration!

It comes as no surprise that the long form salesletter is evolving.  Many marketers are beginning to use shorter pages or creating a video salesletter: a 20 or 30 minute autoplay video on a blank white page with a delayed buy button.  These pages are becoming increasingly common.  In part because of the effectiveness of video and audio.  In part because of the growing popularity of OptimizePress.
Why Do You Need Squeeze Pages and Salespages?
Anyone doing business online needs their website visitors to take a specific action when they land upon one’s website: in most cases, submit and email address or purchase a product.

Salespages and squeeze pages are designed to give your website visitors direction instruction as to what you are trying to get them to do. They’re set up to give your [...]

WordPress Plugin: WP Delayed Order Button

I’m sure you’ve seen something similar to the WP Delayed Order Button plugin in action on video salespages.  It’s a popular built-in feature of the WordPress Optimize Press theme which has been used extensively in the Internet Marketing circles for a few years now to build salespages.  I had a client recently who wanted to add a delayed order button into an existing salespage on his blog and we didn’t want to have to install a new site / theme to simply add the delayed order button functionality.  The WP Delayed Order button (a premium WordPress plugin) enabled us to enhance his existing blog to add the feature he was looking for.
WP Delayed Order Button
The WP Delayed Order Button plugin is the result of a recent trend on many video sales pages.  The tested theory behind delayed payment buttons is that the best combination when using a video salespage is to just present the video and nothing else.  When your potential buyer arrives at your salespage there should be no controls on the video.  There’s nothing that can be clicked, they can’t pause, and the only thing that the viewer can do is watch the video as its streamed, just as if it were a TV program.

The thinking behind this is that with each passing second, the viewer realizes that he or she has already invested a certain amount of time on the page and that clicking away from it would be a waste of the time they’ve already “invested” in watching the video.  There’s nothing to do but sit and watch the video (and hopefully the video is compelling enough [...]

Exactly How Disciples of Dan Kennedy Succeed So Well

Dan Kennedy and his crew just revealed a new, free video series called Renegade Millionaire.  I’ve been following the series (three videos released so far and a fourth one coming in two days – you’ll get access to the three that have been released instantly when you register) and it’s got me excited again about marketing.  I’ve been a subscriber of Dan Kennedy’s NO BS Marketing Letter for a few months now and am always impressed by what he delivers.  This video series is no different.  Below you will find an outline of the videos released so far.  I urge you to take note of what’s being shared as many who follow Dan Kennedy experience tremendous shifts in their business.  Enjoy!
How Recessions Make More Millionaires
Dan has used his decades of experience to study the past economic performance of the United States.

He was surprised to discover that most millionaires are made during, and right after, a recession.

In fact, because of the Great Recession, the number of millionaires is expected to almost DOUBLE
in the next ten years.

Where Do You Go Wrong In The Pursuit Of Wealth?
According to Dan Kennedy, when you focus too much on selling stuff rather than getting customers, you
lose your “raving fans.”

Trust me, you don’t want that to happen.

Your raving fans are your dedicated customers.

The ones you attract through smart marketing and
truthful messaging.

The ones that listen and engage with your emails, text messages, etc.

When you have raving fans, they’re responsive.

When you watch this video, you’ll discover more about attracting buyers to your business.

Are You Still Waiting… Or Are You Preparing For Change?

I had some downtime this weekend and caught up on some back issues of Bill Glazer and Dan Kennedy’s NO BS Marketing Newsletter.  I’ve been a member for a while and my usual strategy is to shut down my computer and turn off my phone for about an hour the day that the newsletter hits my mailbox but sometimes life gets in the way.  I was about two issues behind so as I waited on a batch of bread to bake, I sat down and read through the November and December issues.

The November issue brought to mind a powerful scene from a movie I watched a few years ago called Facing The Giants.  The scene tells the story of two farmers who needed rain for their fields. Both prayed for rain but only one of them went out to prepare his fields to receive the rain.  The scene goes on to ask: Which one do you think trusted God to send the Rain?
Facing The Giants: Prepare Your Fields For Rain

I find this story to be a great parable for the New Year and, particularly, New Years Resolutions.  After all, here we stand, halfway through the first month of a brand new year —full of hope for what will unfold in the next 11 1/2 months.  Many of us ritualistically made plans and set goals for 2012… some realistic and some just a little beyond our reach.  But the trouble with some New Years Resolutions is that they’re just wishes on pieces of paper.  There’s no action plan to make those wishes come true.  It’s a Secret spoken into the wind and some [...]
